AT A GLANCE
A little context.
A world of possibility.
Historic cities, courtyards, shrines and living traditions framed by the hills of central Nepal.
More than one city
Kathmandu Valley brings together Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur with historic settlements and sacred sites across the valley. UNESCO's Kathmandu Valley property is made up of seven monument zones, so it is better understood as a connected cultural landscape than as one attraction.
Plan by area
Give each day a geographic focus rather than crossing the valley repeatedly. Old-city streets reward slow exploration, while major heritage areas deserve time beyond a quick photo stop. Check official opening arrangements and local access for the day you intend to visit.
Use it as a gateway carefully
Many Nepal itineraries begin here, but arrival tasks, traffic and onward arrangements all use time. Keep at least one flexible block before a fixed onward connection, and separate confirmed transfers from rough travel-time estimates.
